What is Strictures ?
A stricture is a narrowing of a passage in the body. This can happen in various organs, including the esophagus (food pipe), intestines, and bile ducts. Strictures can make it difficult for substances to pass through normally and can cause symptoms like pain, difficulty swallowing, and blockages.
What is Obstruction ?
An obstruction is a complete blockage of a passage in the body. This can be caused by strictures, but also by foreign objects, twists (volvulus), or internal hernias. Obstructions can be very serious and require medical attention.
What is Volvulus ?
Volvulus is a twisting of a part of the intestine around itself. This twisting can block the flow of food and waste through the intestines and can cause severe pain, vomiting, and constipation.
What is Malrotation ?
Malrotation is a birth defect where the intestines and other abdominal organs haven’t developed in their normal positions. This can lead to volvulus and other problems later in life.
What is Adhesions and Bands ?
Adhesions are scar tissue bands that can form inside the abdomen after surgery or inflammation. Bands are similar but can be thicker and more fibrous. Both can cause obstructions by trapping or kinking parts of the intestine.
What is Internal Herniation ?
An internal hernia occurs when part of the intestine pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. This can cause obstruction and other problems.
What is Benign Tumors ?
Benign tumors are growths that are not cancerous. While they can cause problems due to their size or location, they don’t spread to other parts of the body.
What is Cancer ?
Cancer is a disease caused by abnormal cell growth that can spread to other parts of the body. It can affect any organ, including the intestines.
What is Carcinoid tumors ?
Carcinoid tumors are a rare type of cancer that can start in the hormone-producing cells of the digestive system. They often grow slowly and may not cause symptoms for a long time.
What is Lymphoma ?
Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is a network of tissues and organs that help fight infection. It can affect the lymph nodes in the abdomen, which can cause problems with digestion.
What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease ?
IBD is a group of chronic inflammatory conditions that affect the lining of the intestines. The two main types are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
What is Crohn’s disease ?
Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation anywhere in the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. Symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss.
What is Ulcerative Colitis?
Ulcerative colitis causes chronic inflammation of the inner lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Symptoms can include frequent bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and urgency to have a bowel movement.
What is Ulceration and Hemorrhage ?
Ulceration is the formation of an open sore on the lining of an organ, like the stomach or intestines. Hemorrhage is bleeding. Both can occur with IBD and other conditions.
What is Perforation ?
A perforation is a hole in the wall of an organ, such as the intestine. This can be a life-threatening complication of some digestive conditions.
What is Ileostomy related problems ?
An ileostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an opening (stoma) on the abdomen to allow waste to bypass the diseased or damaged part of the intestine. People with ileostomies can experience problems like leaks, blockages, and skin irritation around the stoma.
